How long should you take it easy after a concussion?

Most people should take it easy for the first 24–48 hours after a concussion, and then gradually increase activity as long as it does not cause a clear, long-term worsening of symptoms.

After a concussion, you should take it easy for the first 24–48, possibly up to 72 hours.

During this period, relative rest is recommended and work, exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided as long as symptoms are triggered or worsened, even with light activity such as a short walk. Screen use should be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes at a time, and should be stopped earlier if symptoms increase.

Thereafter, gradual and symptom-controlled activity with careful escalation is recommended. Both too much rest and pushing yourself too early can delay recovery and increase the risk of developing post-concussion syndrome.

If symptoms last more than 2–3 weeks, targeted follow-up should be considered.
