What should you not do when you have a concussion?
You should avoid anything that places a high strain on the brain, significantly increases symptoms, or poses a risk of another blow to the head, especially in the first few days.
What not to do after a concussion depends on what stage you are in.
In the acute stage (first few days–1–2 weeks), one should avoid strenuous physical activity, risk of new head injury, alcohol, prolonged screen use without breaks, bright light and noise, stress, and pushing through obvious symptoms. At the same time, one should not become completely passive beyond the first 24–48 hours.
In the case of persistent complaints (> 3–4 weeks), one should avoid prolonged inactivity and activity avoidance, unsystematic self-treatment, and repeated symptom provocation without recovery. The key is to avoid both over- and under-exertion, and rather follow a gradual, symptom-guided progression.
In the event of persistent symptoms lasting longer than 10-12 weeks, or gradual worsening of symptoms, one should contact a healthcare professional specializing in head injuries and concussions for targeted follow-up and rehabilitation.
The earlier you start targeted rehabilitation, the better the prognosis.
